Wednesday 8 February: walking some of the Cape to Cape trail
A dawn chorus of exotic bird song which in my delerious dreams seems like a car alarm! We’re on the track soon after 9.00 walking south along the coast: sandy scrubland, pink granite, white sands and turquoise seas. We follow the Cape to Cape track which in its entirety is 160km from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leuwin in Augusta. We see a pod of dolphins from a distance and chat to a few Aussies on the way: Simon discusses the local sights whereas I share the benefits of Lululemon T-shirts! After a couple of hours we stop at a beach for a swim where the the swell is big and I’m knocked off my feet. A rock pool offers a more gentle option. Then we head back to Canal Rocks where some local girls lend us their goggles and snorkel and we swim in cool clear waters where I spy a few striped fish in the seaweed. Onwards to the Aquarium which is a sheltered swimming area filled with young things. The water is lovely and cool. Almost home we take a detour to the Caves Road Hitel for a well deserved Little Creatures Hazy Lager before descending the valley back to Yallingup for tea and some relaxation. A Kookaburra sits on our van awning. Supper is spaghetti carbonara in the van. It is much cooler in the evening and a cardigan is required! We’re both feeling much more relaxed now that the next few days’ accommodation is sorted out. We had never thought everywhere would be so busy…
