Saturday 4 March: Kalbarri National Park

We’re off to the Kalbarri National Park today and because of the extreme heat we’ve been advised to go early. So alarm set for 5.30am we see an impressive sunrise on the way (sun down last night and up again this morning) it’s only about 49 minutes and infact is quite cloudy so cooler for us. First to Natures Window an impressive jagged hole in the rock towering above the Murchison River Gorge. The river is mainly dry at the moment but we understand it can flood into a torrent on occasions. There are a few Instagram posers around but we wait our turn for numerous shots of the rocky gorge and riverbed below. On to the sky walk, two recently created large viewing platforms reaching over the edge. Finally to Z-bend lookout where the gorge plunges 150m down to where the river red gums create a striking contrast against the earthy Tumblagooda sandstone. We walk down through the gorge to the river which is rather shallow and stagnant today so not tempting for a dip. A talkative Aussie entertains us on the way down but we manage to escape for the climb back! Breakfast at the top. One of the great advantages of taking our home with us! Back along roads lined with a variety of banksia and bush land we decide to take another look at the Window now that the cloud has cleared. It’s busier, and hotter, now. Back to Kalbarri and a swim and read on the beach before and after lunch in the shade of the van. We’re going out to eat this evening at a local fish restaurant.
