Tuesday 07 March

Today we go in a scenic flight. Just the two of us in a tiny Cessna. Clare is in the back and I’m next to the pilot, very close  The plane dates from the 1970s and looks very dated. It’s like being in a small vintage car. We trundle along the runway and soon are airborne. The plane dips and sways a bit but then levels out.

We fly over Denham and then over to the Useless Loop salt flats. A huge pile of salt ready for collection and export to Asia. Then over the Zuytdorp cliffs and all the way up Dirk Hartog Island. Then across to Francois Peron NP and an hour and a half later back to the airstrip. Most amazing views all the way with unbelievable colours on land and sea.

For supper we go to the Old Pearler restaurant made out of compressed blocks of tiny shells. Seafood platter with red emperor, oysters Kirkpatrick (cooked with bacon), crayfish, snapper, scallops, garlic  prawns and calamari. It’s a BYO so we bring Riesling which we’d bought at a Denmark vineyard.
